A New Ally in Healing?
Having recently stumbled upon the world of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as tapping, I find myself standing at the threshold of what seems to be a promising path in my ongoing battle against the impacts of narcissistic abuse. Now, I have friends years ago who told me about EFT, and I remember thinking it sounded interesting, yet I put it in the back of my mind. Until now. The journey of healing from such a profound and disempowering form of abuse is intricate and deeply personal. In this process, finding tools that resonate and offer a glimmer of hope is nothing short of a blessing. This post is not just my story but also an invitation to anyone who, like me, is always seeking ways to reclaim their power and peace.

What is EFT?
EFT is a psychological acupressure technique that I've found to be intriguing in its simplicity yet profound in its potential. It involves tapping on specific meridian points,, namely nine of them, on the body while focusing on particular negative emotions or physical sensations. Rooted in the principles of ancient Chinese medicine and modern psychology, EFT aims to balance the energy system of the body, thereby improving emotional health.
Why EFT for Narcissistic Abuse Recovery?
Narcissistic abuse, characterized by its complex interplay of manipulation, gaslighting, and emotional rollercoasters, leaves deep emotional scars. Traditional therapy, support groups, and self-care routines are crucial, and still I've realized that the journey of healing often requires a diverse arsenal of tools.
EFT, in this context, holds potential due to its focus on releasing trapped negative emotions. The physical act of tapping, combined with vocalizing experiences and emotions, can offer a unique way to process and release the pain that words alone might not reach. Or so I have read. Indeed I saw a book a year ago and flipped through it, and then I forgot it, until I found it again: "The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living Paperback – Illustrated" by Nick Ortner and Mark Hyman M.D.)*
My Experience with EFT
As a newcomer to EFT, I suppose I have approached it with a mix of skepticism and hope. In my initial few sessions so far, I focused on specific emotions linked to my experiences of narcissistic abuse and in particular recent triggers that have left me with feelings of worthlessness, confusion, and betrayal. As I tapped on the meridian points, guided by various online resources and practitioners, to my surprise I experienced indeed some release of emotional tension. It's as though I was giving myself permission to let go of the burdens I'd been carrying.
Advice for Others Trying EFT
1. Start with an Open Mind: The concept of tapping might seem unusual at first, but its effectiveness can be hindered by skepticism. Approach it with curiosity.
2. Seek Guidance: While EFT can be self-taught (there are books that can guide you like "The Tapping Solution: A Revolutionary System for Stress-Free Living Paperback – Illustrated" by Nick Ortner and Mark Hyman M.D.)*, initially working with a certified practitioner may surely provide valuable guidance. I haven’t done that… yet.
3. Personalize Your Experience: EFT is not one-size-fits-all. Tailor your tapping sessions to address your specific experiences and emotions related to narcissistic abuse.
4. Consistency is Key: Like any therapeutic tool, EFT requires consistency. Regular practice can deepen its impact.
5. Combine with Other Therapies: EFT is most effective when used as a complementary tool alongside other therapeutic practices.
6. Listen to Your Body and Emotions: Be aware of how your body and emotions respond during and after tapping. This awareness can be a guide to your healing journey.
Moving Forward
My journey with EFT is just beginning, but already it has offered me a potential new lens through which I view my healing process. For anyone struggling with the aftermath of narcissistic abuse, I say to you go ahead and explore EFT as a potential tool in your recovery arsenal. Remember, healing is not linear, and every step, no matter how small, is a stride towards reclaiming your life and peace.
With that, let's try tapping our way into our strength and resilience!
