In the whirlwind of life's unpredictable storms, finding a beacon of hope and joy is not just a relief; it's a triumph. This past year has been a hurricane, yet somewhere in the eye of the storm I have discovered calm, resilience, healing, and realized some hope there is an unbreakable bond between parent and child. After enduring a prolonged and emotionally taxing battle marked by parental alienation and the aftermath of divorce, the ruling of shared custody and a restored living arrangement for my daughter has been a shining victory in the darkness.

Celebrating Shared Custody and Healing
Parental alienation, a strategy often employed amidst the bitterness of separation, seeks to undermine and weaken the parent-child relationship. It's a form of psychological manipulation that inflicts confusion, loss, and immense pain. I know it all too well. Coupled with the challenges of narcissistic abuse and the daunting journey of healing from Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD), the road to recovery has been arduous and, at times, impossible.
Yet, here we are, a year later, not merely surviving but thriving. Dare I hope this will continue? Anyway, the court settlement that granted shared custody and an every-other-week living arrangement with my 11-year-old daughter has been nothing short of miraculous. It has given me a glimmer of hope in navigating the tumultuous aftermath of divorce and parental alienation.
The transformation in my daughter has been profound and deeply moving since my husband I got married in late 2022. Once overshadowed by the turmoil that surrounded her, she is now blossoming into a vibrant, joyous child, reveling in the innocence and wonder of childhood again. Witnessing her regain her spirit and engage in carefree laughter with friends is a sight to behold and cherish.
This weekend I got to see her renewed zest for life yet again. My daughter and her friend, full of curiosity and the freedom to explore, made sushi together. This simple act of culinary adventure might seem mundane to some, but to me, it symbolized so much more. It was a declaration of her resilience, her ability to find joy in new experiences, and her journey back to being a kid again. My husband sliced the salmon, and I prepped the sushi rice, and armed with the tools (mats, spoons, knife, dipping bowl, etc.)*, off they went. Eager to make the experience extra special, she also asked if she could use the elegant chopsticks we got as a wedding gift. You can imagine my mother's pride when I saw their handiwork displayed on our bamboo 'sushi boat'—a lavish spread of California rolls and classic salmon sushi—using these fantastic bamboo chopsticks very similar to these*, perfectly blending tradition with her ad venturous spirit.
The fact that they embarked on this feat while my husband and I enjoyed a much-needed date over afternoon tea (which by the way we realize of course could easily be recreated at home*) added to the moment's sweetness. At 11, I had no clue what sushi was, yet here was my daughter, not just aware but capable of creating it. Their culinary creation was not just food; it was a masterpiece of healing, joy, and normalcy.
This transformation didn't occur overnight. It's been over a year, indeed many more, of hard-fought battles, relentless advocacy, and unwavering love. It's been a journey of rediscovering joy in the simple moments, like shared laughter over homemade sushi or the warmth of a family afternoon tea. These moments, seemingly small, are monumental victories against the backdrop of our struggles.

What a year of tremendous growth and healing! It's finally becoming a reminder of the power of resilience, the importance of fighting for what's right, and the unending love between parent and child. My daughter's journey back to her joyful, child-like self gives me hope for all going through the aftermath of parental alienation and divorce.
This experience has taught me and my husband that even in the face of overwhelming odds, transformation is possible. Joy can be reclaimed, and the bonds of family, though tested, can emerge stronger. Our story is one of triumph, a testament to the healing power of love, perseverance, and the enduring spirit of a child rediscovering the joy of just being a kid.
