Writing has often proven a therapeutic escape for me, a refuge where I could weave my thoughts and experiences into a tapestry of self-expression and healing. This journey began with an exploration into the world of memoirs, seeking inspiration from those who had penned their lives onto paper.

My quest led me to Tara Westover's "Educated," a memoir that resonated with me profoundly. Westover's story of transformation and self-discovery was a beacon of hope, illustrating the power of education and the resilience of the human spirit. This book didn't just offer me an engaging read; it was a mirror reflecting my own potential to grow through my past.

Encouraged, I began to write my memoir, initially as a means to understand my life better. This process was more than just recounting events; it was an introspective journey. Through writing, I delved into the depths of my memories, confronting and embracing them. This act of chronicling my life wasn't just about preservation but also about understanding and acceptance – a path to self-discovery.

However, life is unpredictable. I faced a significant setback when I lost all my files – my memoir, my reflections, my hard-earned words – gone in a digital mishap. It was devastating. This loss taught me the importance of backups, a technical lesson with profound implications. It was a harsh reminder that while our memories are precious, they are also vulnerable.

Post-divorce, I found myself in the throes of ongoing abuse. It was a challenging period, where documenting these experiences became not just a therapeutic tool but also a necessary record. This time, my lesson was learned to safeguard my writings. In this phase, backups would become more than a technical necessity; they became my emotional and legal safeguards. Each incident, each feeling, each moment of despair and hope, I captured and backed up diligently. This practice served two purposes. I will share more on that in another post.

Every setback is a setup for a comeback though. I started writing again, but it took time and more perspective. The loss of my files, however painful, had a silver lining – it allowed me to approach my story with fresh eyes and a deeper understanding.

My journey of writing and self-recovery reminds me of Plato's Allegory of the Cave. For a long time, I, like the cave dwellers, was confined to the shadows of my past experiences and traumas, unaware of what was really happening. Writing was one of the lights that led me out of this cave, helping me see the world and myself in a new, more authentic light. Through writing, I've learned that our experiences, no matter how painful, are valuable. They shape us, teach us, and eventually, empower us. Writing about these experiences is not just about recording them; it's about transforming them into something meaningful, something healing.

As I continue to write, I realize that this journey is never-ending, a message my therapist echoed early in my healing journey. Each word I write is a step towards healing, understanding, and empowerment. Writing is not just an act of self-expression; it is an act of self-liberation. And as I write, I heal, grow, and step into the light of self-awareness, much like emerging from Plato’s cave into the brightness of understanding and hope.

Writing has been my guide through the labyrinth of life, helping me navigate its twists and turns with resilience and hope. It's a journey that started with inspiration and went through loss, only to emerge stronger and more insightful. This is the power of writing - it's not just about creating stories; it's about rewriting our own.
